First practical try of new honemade plankton net

In the photos below, Rhys is trying out our new homemade 10-20 micron plankton net – to collect algal and protozoal samples from Stowe Pool in Lichfield to look at in the microscope. Total cost of this homemade version under £15 with better net size (smaller gaps in the note) than much more expensive commercial versions.

Below is an example of commercially available Plankton net – as you can see mesh size is much larger than the size of protozoa so many would escape. This is cheapest commercial version I found today (except student versions) – much more expensive versions are available (up to £130) but again they have mesh sizes much larger than the size of a protozoa.
