Detecting meteors from Graves (143.049MHz)

Hi Andy

Just tried sending you an email…..but it disappeared. Here goes again…..will now try to keep it brief. After some interesting tests….i can confirm the following

‘Graves (143.049mhz)’ appears to put out a ‘data signal’ on……143.049 (Upper side band) that is very similar to…gb3vhf……on…… 144.430 (CW). The only major difference is that gb3vhf gives its

‘Ident’ transmission in….cw……every few minutes. I have seen both data signals displayed on the waterfall using WSJT9 and ‘Graves (143.049mhz)’ is considerably stronger when using…vertical polarization. My own homebrew 5/8 wave vertical at ten feet high (2 poles high) results in the data signal being stronger on that than it is when using my Moxon on top of the tower…..and that is…horizontal of course. This confirms that ‘Graves (143.049mhz)’ polarization appears to be vertically polarized.

I suggest now that you mount your Moxon vertically Andy but you need to be absolutely certain though that you beam……south east from where we are in Lichfield, UK. This is extremely important. As you know, when carrying out these tests I have received some pretty potent meteors/pings  using my h/brew 5/8 wave vertical along with my ic-706…………and also the ‘dongle’ too at times. There is another ‘test’ i would like to try at some point Andy….I would like to know if they are receivable on…..143.050 USB. This is because i have the following bit of kit…some years back i bought a…..Kenwood……th-f7. This is a handheld (tiny transceiver) for….vhf/uhf   (FM). However……..it will receive all of the HF bands…….all modes – AM/FM/USB/LSB……….and a very sensitive receiver too. Sadly, on vhf/uhf the tuning steps don’t allow for very fine tuning…..so i can only set it to…..143.050  ( usb )     so i do want to try and see if meteors/pings are readable/detectable  on 143.050 when using wsjt9 of course………..and not spectrum lab. Anyhow……..i did monitor some pretty strong meteors this afternoon. Sadly there weren’t many, so the rate is still quite low at the moment but in the next few days i gather they will be more frequent.
